Frances Davis

Frances Davis was born in 1855 in England and moved to Juneau in 1891, but not before she had received formal artistic training and traveled extensively.  She painted as she traveled and when she arrived in Juneau at age 37, she continued to paint, captivated, as the artists who followed, by the pale light of sunsets and the  glow of glaciers in moonlight.

She left this life in 1932, and left Juneau this precious legacy. Over the years, even these remnants of her work have been generously released in various ways and at various times.  We proudly display these now, and though we suspect Frances would no doubt regard them as not worth all this fuss, certainly to us they are priceless treasures of Alaska's past. She is now noted as an important scenic and wildlife artist, and certainly amoung the top few painters of Alaska in her era.
